Request BOV Emergency Meeting to Reinstate Sullivan

Here’s the short version:

  • Write the BOV today by 5pm to ask them to call for an emergency meeting on June 27th to reinstate President Sullivan.
  • Write “Board of Visitors” as the subject line of the email message.
  • Include the phrase “Board of Visitors” in the first line of the body of the email. Please send email messages to both: Susan Harris, secretary for the Board of Visitors, at sgh4c@virginia.edu AND K. Ann Witkower, administrative assistant to the Faculty Senate, aw6v@virginia.edu

UVA folks, Lauren Russo sent around an excellent email this morning detailing how (and why) to contact the BOV to hold an emergency meeting to reinstate President Sullivan. See also this Washington Post article.

Email below. Take action! Do it with your morning coffee! Below Lauren’s email I provided an example of the email I sent them. Took me less than a minute to write. UPDATE: They only have until 5pm today (Thursday June 21st) to call this emergency meeting on June 27th. So please take a minute to write to them today.

Also added Lauren’s much much more eloquent example email. You might want to go with her special sauce. It’s delicious.

Lauren’s email:

Hey guys

I know all of you are following the BOV fiasco–here’s the latest information I have (below). If you feel so moved, take a minute to write the BOV today and encourage them to call an emergency meeting to reinstate Teresa Sullivan. Word on the street is that they have they have the votes now that Kington has resigned.
Susan Harris, the Secretary for the Board of Visitors, will forward emails to all members of the Board, if you do the following:
Write “Board of Visitors” as the subject line of the email message.
Include the phrase “Board of Visitors” in the first line of the body of the email. Please send email messages to both:
Susan Harris, secretary for the Board of Visitors, at sgh4c@virginia.edu AND
K. Ann Witkower, administrative assistant to the Faculty Senate, aw6v@virginia.edu
(I know people have varying opinions on the greatness of Sullivan and whether she’s the “right” president for U.Va. I would encourage you to read her statement to get a sense of the type of president she was and would continue be for the University if you have concerns. I would also encourage you to read the statement of Dragas to get a sense of the kind of president she is advocating for (god knows who would take the job at this point).I would also point you to the hit our reputation has already taken due to the mismanagement of the process by Dragas and the BOV.)
Finally, if you have one more hot minute, call McDonnell’s office and simply ask for the resignation of Dragas from the BOV. She has disgraced us, on a national level, and her actions show that while she may think she has the best interests of the University at heart, she clearly doesn’t. He needs to step up and do his damn job here. To leave a voice message for the Governor call 804-786-2211.
You don’t need to write long or impassioned or eloquent emails, just a quick, here’s who I am in relation to the University and respectfully, here’s what I want.
Okay, I think that’s it!
Feel free to ask me any questions! Thanks!
Lauren

Rachel’s Example email:

To the University Board of Visitors,
I would like the Board of Visitors to hold an emergency meeting as soon as possible to reinstate Teresa Sullivan as president of the University. My name is Rachel Vogus, I graduated Class of ’05, and I live and work in Charlottesville. Thank you for passing on my message to the BOV. If you have any follow-up questions or need additional information from me, please let me know.
Thanks,
Rachel Vogus

Lauren’s Example Email:

To the University Board of Visitors:

I am a double ‘Hoo, in addition to currently working at the University. The University is not simply a place I went to undergraduate and graduate school; it is my home. At the University, I learned no less than the values of honor, integrity, and tradition, and the beauty of Jefferson’s vision of institution “based on the illimitable freedom of the human mind.” That’s right, I also learned to quote Jefferson in times of duress. This is one of those times.

I am writing you to today to ask you to call an emergency meeting on June 27th, to reinstate President Sullivan. I am also writing to formally and respectfully ask for the resignation of Rector Dragas.

I appreciate that the Board is and will continue to attempt to act in a manner that is best for the University, but its actions under Ms. Dragas so far have represented, to me and many others, a disappointing failure of leadership, vision, judgment, administration, and integrity.

I firmly believe that while it is important for the business of the University be attended to effectively, the manner in which it should be done should not so utterly disrupt our institution to its core, as has happened, with so little regard for what so many University stakeholders desire. I personally believe that President Sullivan’s incremental but effective approach as executed under her sound and capable leadership is necessary for the University to continue its tradition as an outstanding and inspiring institution.

As the Board of Visitors, you are the only ones who are in a position to reverse the fiasco we are currently embroiled in, a fiasco that includes adverse publicity for the school, loss of donations, and potential for loss of institutional status.

Please do the right and honorable thing; call a meeting on June 27th and reinstate Teresa Sullivan.

Sincerely,
Lauren Russo
